Immune cell-derived extracellular vesicles are biomarker for early Parkinson’s disease

In this webinar, , Neurologist at the Neurocenter of Southern Switzerland and Head of the Neuroscience Division at the Institute for Translational Research USI-EOC in Bellinzona, will address the role of palsmatic extracellular vesicles for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.


Extracellular vesicles (EV), secreted membrane particles involved in cell-to-cell communication, carry important information on immunity and its dysregulation. Recent studies have demonstrated the crucial role of peripheral and central inflammation in causing Parkinson’s disease, as well as the involvement of EV in mediating neuron-glial interactions during neurodegeneration.


Prof. Melli will present her recent work on how profiling multiple surface proteins present on extracellular vesicles, combined with machine learning tools, allows the stratification of patients with Parkinson’s disease at different stages of disease, including early premotor phases. She will discuss how specific EV signatures related to circulating immune cells might be related to different inflammation waves in the course of neurodegenerative disease.


Finally, she will discuss the next steps toward clinical implementation of EV immunophenotyping as a minimally invasive tool for early and differential diagnosis across Parkinson’s disease-spectrum disorders.
