Young-onset dementia: A practical diagnostic framework

A webinar by Dr. Olivier Rouaud, University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV)
In this webinar, , Neurologist at the Leenaards Memory Center in Lausanne, will address the diagnostic approach to young-onset dementia, with a focus on clinical reasoning and the role of complementary examinations.
Young-onset dementia, defined as dementia occurring before the age of 65, presents unique diagnostic challenges due to its heterogeneous etiology, including neurodegenerative, vascular, inflammatory, or metabolic causes. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical, as it significantly impacts management, prognosis, and patient support.
Dr. Rouaud will emphasize the central role of clinical assessment—detailed history-taking, cognitive and behavioral evaluation, and neurological examination—to guide the differential diagnosis. He will also discuss the strategic use of complementary tools, such as neuroimaging, biomarkers and genetic testing, tailored to the patient’s profile. The goal to recognize that neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are frequent causes of young-onset dementia, while ensuring that rarer, potentially treatable conditions are not overlooked.
This webinar is hosted by , Unit of Neurodegeneration, Focus on Dementia Diseases, Department of Neurology, University Hospital Basel.
