Sleep in neurodegenerative disease – from clinical routine to biomarkers and interventions

A webinar by Dr. Simon Schreiner, University Hospital Zurich
Sleep-wake disturbances are common in people with neurodegenerative disease. They may arise early in the disease course and provide important diagnostic clues, while often being difficult to treat and substantially contributing to clinical burden.
Emerging evidence suggests that sleep disruption and neurodegeneration interact in a bidirectional relationship. This may create a vicious cycle in which neurodegeneration disrupts sleep, which may in turn promote neurodegenerative processes. At the same time, this relationship opens new opportunities to target neurodegenerative diseases through sleep-directed interventions.
In this seminar, will discuss the clinical features and management of sleep-wake disturbances in neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. He will review the evidence supporting the bidirectional relationship between sleep and neurodegeneration drawing on recent clinical and translational research, including our own studies. Finally, he will highlight the potential of sleep-based biomarkers and interventions aimed at restoring sleep to advance early detection, and, potentially, open new avenues for disease-modifying therapies by leveraging sleep’s restorative functions.
The webinar is hosted by Dr. Elena Wenz (Inselspital Bern) and offers a platform for shared learning and discussion, enabling participants to exchange insights and experiences.
