An intersectional approach to understanding Alzheimer's disease risk

Website Event Cover #3

A webinar by Dr. Sivaniya Subramaniapillai, University of Lausanne

Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk is shaped by biological factors including sex and genetics, as well as by social and structural determinants such as socioeconomic position and experiences of discrimination. Yet neuroimaging research examining brain aging and Alzheimer's disease underrepresents diverse populations, limiting our understanding of how these factors interact to shape dementia risk.

This presentation examines AD disparities from an intersectional perspective, focusing specifically on how sex, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status intersect to influence brain aging and dementia outcomes. will also discuss current barriers to representative neuroimaging research alongside emerging methodological innovations that can advance this work. By incorporating intersectional frameworks into dementia research, more precise risk models and more equitable approaches to diagnosis and care can be developed, accounting for the complex ways in which biology, social context, and structural inequalities influence brain health across diverse communities.
