Molecular imaging: a pillar of precision medicine in Alzheimer’s disease

A webinar by Prof. Valentina Garibotto, University of Geneva
Molecular imaging is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of precision medicine in Alzheimer’s disease, providing unique insights into the underlying biological processes that drive cognitive decline. In this webinar, will discuss how advanced imaging techniques—particularly positron emission tomography (PET) targeting amyloid, tau, and markers of neurodegeneration—enable in vivo characterization of the disease across its full spectrum, from preclinical stages to advanced dementia.
By moving beyond traditional symptom-based diagnosis, molecular imaging allows for a more accurate and biologically defined classification of patients. This is essential for identifying distinct disease subtypes, understanding individual variability in disease progression, and predicting clinical outcomes. The integration of imaging biomarkers with other sources of information, including clinical data and fluid biomarkers, will also be addressed as a key step toward personalized diagnostic pathways.
The talk will further highlight the role of molecular imaging in therapeutic development, including patient selection and stratification in clinical trials, as well as monitoring treatment response in the era of disease-modifying therapies, recently available also in Switzerland. Particular emphasis will be placed on early experience with amyloid-targeting treatments.
Finally, Prof. Garibotto will outline current challenges and future directions, including the implementation of imaging-driven decision-making in routine clinical practice and the integration of artificial intelligence for the analysis of complex multimodal datasets.
Overall, this presentation will illustrate how molecular imaging is transforming Alzheimer’s disease management into a truly precision-based approach, with tangible benefits for patients, clinicians, and research.
