Deciphering Astrocyte-Neuron Interactions in Brain Metabolism and Signaling. Astrocytes, positioned between neurons and blood vessels, play a key role in controlling the brain’s extracellular environment and energy metabolism. They detect neuronal activity and respond by releasing lactate, which supplies neurons with energy and modulates their activity. Jean-Yves Chatton and his team study these interactions in genetically modified mice and human brain tissue, using advanced imaging, electrophysiology, and optogenetics. Their research aims to understand how these dynamics affect memory and motor function in both healthy and Alzheimer’s-affected brains.
